For eight years, the All My Relations Women’s Basketball team has been a safe and healthy vehicle for ladies of the Downtown Eastside to get involved in their community. Our team consists of ten young Aboriginal women from various nations and backgrounds ranging in age from 17 to 27 years. Many of us are single mothers, post-secondary students and all committed advocates for sports and healthy living. In basketball we learn that you have to practice how you want to play and in our lives we try to be the change that we want to see in our communities. We volunteer, mentor youth, teach others how to play sports, and give back however we can.

This year, the team is once again competing in both the All Native Qualifying Tournament at the end of November and in the 53rd All Native Basketball Tournament in February in Prince Rupert, BC. It is a tournament that brings together Aboriginal people to represent their nations in a healthy and positive competitive sport; All My Relations intends to represent the Aboriginal people who reside in Vancouver. As always, funding is extremely limited, and many of us face personal financial challenges with raising families and attending school. We are seeking assistance in respect for transportation, tournament fees, accommodation costs, etc. We know that we cannot reach our goal without the help of others, and we are reaching out and would greatly appreciate any assistance that you may be able to offer in support.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our goals and aspirations. We appreciate this opportunity from your association to further support our participation in women’s sports. This donation will enable high-risk/low income Aboriginal women to be leaders and role models for others in the Downtown Eastside. But most importantly, it will encourage native youth to be active in their communities in a safe and healthy manner.
